The Saga of Mathematics: A Brief History

On the left are a set of downloadable powerpoint presentations by Martin Lewinter and William Widulski on the history of mathematics. They present mathematics in an interesting, historical context and point out the many links to art, philosophy, music, computers, navigation, science, and technology. The arithmetic, alegbra, and geometry are presented in a way that makes them relevant to daily life as well as larger issues. Please view at your pleasure and enjoy.

Perhaps I could best describe my experience of doing mathematics in terms of entering a dark mansion. You go into the first room and it’s dark, completely dark. You stumble around, bumping into furniture. Gradually, you learn where each piece of furniture is. And finally, after six months or so, you find the light switch and turn it on. Suddenly, it’s all illuminated and you can see exactly where you were. Then you enter the next dark room….
